He is actually 6 months later than he wanted, but I was not about to pay $800 for him to get his permit when he turned 15. I made him wait (aren't I mean?) until 15 1/2 when it was FREE. Yea, I thought that was a better deal too. Anyway, a week or so ago, he took a four hour class, passed the written test with only missing one, and got his temporary permit. He has checked the mail every day since to see if the permanent one was there. Today, finally, he received his "official" permit.
It seems scary that after only one class he is legal to drive. I was lucky that when I was 16, Driver's Ed was offered at school for no extra cost. They brought in the big simulators to the parking lot and we practiced in there for a week before getting behind the wheel training with an instructor for another week. That was only after classroom work for weeks too. I guess times have changed and I have now become the certified instructor by default.
We do plan on getting him in a 2 day driving class soon (that is still more than I want to pay) but so far he is doing very well. I guess all those times I took him driving in empty parking lots last summer were helpful. He is very good to go the speed limit although sometimes he wants to get to that limit very quickly. The days of me going off by myself to the store or to pick up a child at school are gone. Now all I hear is "Where are you going?", "Can I drive?", "Can I go the long way home?" This is going to be a long year. I know I will be spending more time in the car than I already am and that is too much now. (Wish me luck!)

Congrats on the permit. I am with you, I would've waited the extra 6 months too and saved myself $800. We had drivers ed in school, like it took it for a whole semester, quarter, whatever it was back then. I sat through a class and then had so much driving time, all for free! I hate that you have to pay for drivers' ed these days. Rip off!
LOL! I will be there soon enough! So I moved at a good time? HAHAHA! Seriously, he will be a great driver! :)
Your white van is not the only one I have to watch out for in this neighborhood - I see a certain teenager driving the Smith's van as well :) I actually think it's exciting, I am looking forward to my kids driving so I can stop being a chauffeur.
Way to go T! We'll be on the lookout! :)
Everytime I leave church to feed Keira, Tyler opens the door for me. He is always so quick to make sure that I have help. Now, I know that is what he is suppossed to do, however, I have left Sacrament meeting to feed a baby, many times over the years, and I don't think that anyone has ever been quite so polite about making sure the women have the help that they need while carrying kids, bags, and carseats! He is a great kid--and is growing up so fast!
By the way, you're not old!
